　　In the Three Kingdoms Period (sān guó shíqī 三國(guó)時(shí)期,220-280AD). Cao Cao (cáo cāo 曹操)and Liu Bei (liú bèi 劉備) were both considerablly talented leaders of two Kingdoms respectively. In order to gain the final domination of the whole country,they contended with each other usually. They were at war again at that time,Liu Bei ordered his generals Zhao Yun (zhào yún 趙云) and Huang Zhong (huáng zhōng 黃忠) to loot Cao Cao’s food supplies. Rather irritated by it,Cao Cao led on a large force against Zhao Yun,who then retreated swiftly as fas as the gates of his camp. There, he ordered the soldiers to open the gate widely,lower the flags and stop drumming. Zhao Yun then stationed his troops in ambush nearly. When Cao Cao arrived and saw the pretty odd situation, he suspected a trap in an instant and thus withdrew his forces rashily.

　　This idiom is nowadays used to indicate metaphorically halting an attack or ceasing all activities.

　　偃旗息鼓 (yǎn qí xī gǔ)

　　故事發(fā)生在三國(guó)時(shí)期。一次，曹操與劉備交戰(zhàn)。劉備命令大將趙云、黃忠去搶奪曹操的糧食。曹操帶領(lǐng)大軍追趕趙云。趙云邊打邊退，一直退到營(yíng)寨前，叫士兵打開(kāi)營(yíng)門(mén)，放倒軍旗，停止擂鼓，在營(yíng)外設(shè)好埋伏。曹軍追到，看到這種情景，懷疑有埋伏，就撤退了。

　　后來(lái)，“偃旗息鼓”這個(gè)成語(yǔ)就用來(lái)比喻停止攻擊或者事情中止。

　　Explanation 解釋

　　Yan: supine, extended to fall. Put down the flag, stop drumming. The original refers to the march when the hidden whereabouts, do not let the enemy aware. Now the metaphor of things to terminate or weaken the momentum.

　　偃：仰臥，引伸為倒下。放倒旗子，停止敲鼓。原指行軍時(shí)隱蔽行蹤，不讓敵人覺(jué)察。現(xiàn)比喻事情終止或聲勢(shì)減弱。
